ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC

ST. MARY ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH

St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church defines its work as religious and

spiritual, national and social. Years of communism; the tremendous

earthquake in 1988 that killed some 55,000 and left cities in ruins; the

now fledgling independence for Armenia; and recent war in Azerbaijan have

created many needs abroad and among immigrants establishing a new life

here. The church shoulders a great responsibility in meeting them. The

worship is Gregorian, with the traditional role of the priest as

intercessor, the deacon offering the litany and the choir and

congregation chanting responsively. Services are in Armenian, with the

service book in Armenian with English transliterations. Moushegh Tashjian

gives the sermon in both Armenian and English. Services are on Sunday

with matins at 10 a.m., and the divine liturgy at 10:30 a.m. Sunday

Mesa presents weekly firesides, which present the basics of the faith and

BAHA’I FAITH OF NEWPORT BEACH

Baha’i Faith of Newport Beach offers weekly Friday evening dinner

discussions and a monthly brunch and lecture on the last Sunday of each

month. Baha’i Faith is an independent global religion whose primary goal

is the spiritual unification of the human family. It believes in the

essential unification of all religions, races, creeds and ethnicities.

HIGASHI HONGANJI BUDDHIST TEMPLE

Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple is a Jodo Shin Buddhist temple. Worship

services are Sunday at 10 a.m. The service is Japanese and English and

includes sutra chanting and a teaching message. The message is based on

the teachings of Buddha’s words and concerning the three treasures of

Buddhism, how we are human beings, receiving the Buddha Dharma, and

receiving peace of mind. Often the teachings of Buddha are related to a

contemporary issue. Those attending can also make incense and/or

monetary offerings. The Dharma Society conducts lecture/discussion series

that are open to the public, Buddhists and non-Buddhists. There is no

ZEN CENTER OF COSTA MESA

Zen master Suzuki says: ‘Cultivate your own spirit. This means not to go

seeking for something outside yourself. Instead of gaining knowledge, you

should clear your mind. When you listen to Zen teaching with a clear mind

you can accept it as if you were hearing something you already knew.’ The

Zen Center of Costa Mesa offers a regular Zen meditation gathering Sunday

The First Church of Christ Scientist holds services Sunday at 10 a.m. and

5 p.m. Sunday school for youth through age 20 is offered concurrent with

the morning service. A testimonial service is held Wednesday at 8 p.m.

JUDAISM

TEMPLE BAT YAHM OF NEWPORT BEACH/IRVINE

Temple Bat Yahm of Newport Beach/Irvine is a reform congregation whose

purpose is to worship God in accordance with the faith of reform Judaism;

to promote religious education; to promote cultural and spiritual welfare

of its members as Jews and as members of the general community; and to

advance the liberal interpretation of the Jewish tradition. Weekly

services are on Friday at 8 p.m., except on the first Friday of the

month, when a family service is held instead at 6 p.m. Services are

of Hebrew in the service, but prayer and song books are Hebrew/English

TEMPLE ISAIAH OF NEWPORT BEACH

Temple Isaiah of Newport Beach holds weekly services on Friday at 8 p.m.,

followed by a fellowship hour with refreshments. Torah class meets

the study of the mysteries of God and creation, are held on Wednesday at
