INSIDE SCOOP

-- Compiled by the Daily Pilot staff

Remember when Lakers rookie power forward Mark Madsen “danced” during

his team’s championship celebration in downtown Los Angeles last month?

Newport Beach experienced a similar brutal assault on the art of

dancing when Mayor Gary Adams tried to bust a move during Fourth of July

ceremonies at Mariners Park.

Egged on by Barnaby the Clown, Adams let loose with moves normally

reserved for someone being attacked by a swarm of killer bees.

Maybe he and Madsen could get some much-needed advice from J-Lo before

summer rolls around again.

And the boat saga continues...

Balboa Island property owner Lodwrick M. Cook and his cohorts no

longer seem so certain about his right to park a 55-foot yacht

perpendicular to the beach.

The proposal recently got bad reviews from neighbors, who complained

about safety problems and beach access. Folks down at City Hall also

raised some concerns, saying that the boat was too wide and crossed the

property line between 1106 and 1108 South Bay Front.

But Cook’s lawyer argued that the yacht was parked legally since Cook

had recorded the two properties as a “single parcel and building site”

with the city. That might be true, Newport Beach officials countered. But

holding the two properties together has no effect on what happens out in

the water, they said.

Now, Cook has submitted a plan to trim back his pier to the city’s

building department. That way, he could probably shift the boat by a few

feet and avoid the property line issue. But such a remodeling project

requires city approval. Councilman Steve Bromberg, who represents Balboa

Island, has said that Cook’s application will be treated like any other.

But “anything that’s going to interfere with the beach or swimming use or

navigation, I’m opposed to it,” he added. We’ll let you know what

happens.

We’ve got that lovin’ feeling again

We hear that Sunday nights at the Villa Nova restaurant on West Coast

Highway have been packed recently for a medley of reasons -- one Medley

in particular, Mckenna Medley. The daughter of the Righteous Brothers’

Bill Medley, a Newport Beach resident, has been playing in her father’s

footsteps on Sunday nights from 6 to 7 p.m.

No report on whether Mckenna is singing “Unchained Melody.”
