DANA POINT - The Newport Harbor Baseball Association Mustang
Division “A” All-Star team pulled out a 13-7 victory over St. Hedwig in
the third-place game of the Dana Point Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The win avenges a 7-5 loss to St. Hedwig in earlier Dana Point
Tournament competition.
Newport was led by the pitching trio of Nick Svendsen, Michael
Helfrich and Chris Griffin, who combined to pitch six effective innings.
The key to the locals’ success was the first inning offense, which
exploded for eight runs.
The offense was led by Alex Rios, who had three hits and two RBIs.
Griffin and Garrett Gallegos each added two hits and two RBIs, while
Jeffrey Frum chipped in two doubles and two RBIs.
Svendsen, Mike Helfrich, Matt Sarvak, Adrian Rodriguez and Scott Ward
all contributed to Newport’s offense with key hits.
Newport will compete in the Mustang District 2 Tournament in Westgrove
against La Mirada on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m.
