DANA POINT - The Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco
Division “B” All-Star team dropped an 8-7 decision to Irvine in
consolation action of the Dana Point Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Irvine jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead thanks to some defensive
lapses, which led to four unearned runs.
Newport chipped into the lead in the bottom of the first with a walk
by Erik Bonn, a single by R.J. D’Cruz and a two-run double by Jonathan
Herdman, making it 6-2.
Newport continued to battle with two more runs in the second inning.
Peter Hapke singled and later scored on an RBI grounder by Kyle Rohan.
Brock Schuler reached base and later scored on a single by John Swift.
Finally, Newport came all the way back and took a 7-6 lead after runs
were scored by Garrett Gordon, Rohan and Dan Winkle.
The excitement was short-lived, however, as Irvine scored runs in the
fifth and sixth innings to win the game.
Herdman and D’Cruz each pitched well, while Rohan was strong on
defense.
D’Cruz finished the game with three hits, while Herdman added two hits
and Ben Frazier, Hapke, Winkle and Swift each added single hits.
Newport will compete in district tournament action beginning Wednesday
at Los Alamitos against La Mirada beginning at 5 p.m.
