POLICE BRIEFS

A brief high-speed chase on the Harbor Freeway on Sunday night ended

with the FBI, in connection with the Huntington Beach and Los Angeles

police departments, apprehending the last of 10 suspects wanted for

felony bank robbery charges dating back to 1999.

Los Angeles police officers chased Liston Oswanio David, 34, of

Huntington Beach, south on the Harbor Freeway for an hour before Liston

ran out of gas around Florence Avenue and was arrested without incident

shortly thereafter. Liston was brought and booked into the Huntington

Beach jail Sunday and was released to the FBI on Monday afternoon, said

Lt. Luis Ochoa of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Ochoa said Det. Mike Nakama of the Huntington Beach Police Department

saw David park his car near Century Boulevard and Broadway Avenue and go

into an unknown residence at 4 p.m. Sunday.

“Nakama wasn’t in uniform and asked the LAPD to approach David when he

came to his car, a Chevrolet Impala,” Ochoa said.

Nakama also requested assistance from a Huntington Beach Police

helicopter, which surveyed the residence until David came out at 8 p.m.

Huntington Beach detectives and the FBI also requested assistance from

the Los Angeles Police Department, which approached David who then led

authorities on the chase that lasted until approximately 9 p.m.

David is wanted in connection with the robbery of the Bank of Yorba

Linda in Huntington Beach on July 7, 1999. David and the nine other

suspects are wanted for several “tie-up” bank robberies throughout the

state of California. The warrant for David’s arrest was issued in April.

It is unknown how much money was taken.

One injured following police chase

My Hein was still in critical condition Tuesday in a coma at UCI

Medical Center after she suffered head trauma from a traffic collision

that occurred Sunday.

Hein was the only one seriously injured when a black 1981 Ford Mustang

driven by 29-year-old James Alan Casey of Garden Grove struck the

passenger side of a 1971 green Cadillac DeVille driven by 50-year-old

Ralph Phillips, in which Hein was a passenger at the intersection of

Brookhurst Street and Ellis Avenue.

Casey is in good condition with no serious injuries at Western Medical

Center in Santa Ana but was arrested shortly after the accident and

charged with felony DUI and felony evading officers. Dustin Schiewe, 26,

a passenger in Casey’s car, was not taken into custody and was also

admitted to Western Medical Center with a broken pelvis. Ralph Phillips,

the driver of the Cadillac, was treated with minor injuries and released

from Long Beach Medical Center.

The accident occurred shortly after 12:20 a.m. as Casey headed north

on Ellis Avenue and ran a red light. Phillips was in the left turn pocket

on Brookhurst and Ellis facing south and turned left going east on

Brookhurst when Casey’s car broadsided Phillips’ Cadillac.

Casey failed to stop at many stop signs and stop lights during the

chase that began shortly after midnight when a Huntington Beach police

officer saw a black Mustang driven by Casey go through a stop sign at

Frankfort Avenue without stopping, said police.

The officer turned on his overhead lights to make an arrest, but Casey

failed to pull over and instead accelerated, turning eastbound onto

Geneva Avenue and then right onto Indianapolis Avenue still failing to

stop at the stop sign. Casey continued to elude police and failed to

follow traffic signals until the chase ended at the intersection of

Brookhurst Street and Ellis Avenue.

Suspects sought in home invasion

Three people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by

paramedics after a home invasion In the 6800 block of Livingston Drive at

2:30 a.m. Friday.

Lt. Luis Ochoa of the Huntington Beach Police Department said four

males with handguns forced entry into the home and held up all nine

residents, leaving three injured and stealing approximately $80,000 in

cash and jewelry.

Ochoa said the residents awakened to sounds of loud screaming around

2:30 a.m.

“The intruders gathered the family members to rob them and tied-up

each resident before ransacking the house,” Ochoa said. “Two of the

victims were pistol-whipped.”

The suspects are still at-large.

High-speed chase makes way through Surf City

A male parolee driver of a 1997 green Ford Thunderbird led Orange

County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase through parts of Orange

and Los Angeles counties Tuesday morning, at one point speeding north

along Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach before heading north where he

eventually collided with a silver 2001 Dodge Stratus at the intersection

of Rosecrans and Wilmington avenues in Compton.

Two of the four people in the Stratus complained of pain and were

taken to Martin Luther King Hospital in Los Angeles where the suspect,

Dean Michael Wills, 33, from Fullerton, was also taken according to Jim

Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Amormino said Wills faces at least five felony charges if not more

including parole violation, evading police, reckless driving, possessing

a weapon and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

“We don’t think the suspect has any injuries but he appeared

non-responsive when approached so there’s a possibility he was under the

influence of narcotics,” Amormino said. Authorities found syringes in the

suspect’s car.
