Deffenbaugh wins Pro/Am competition

Huntington Beach’s Jeff Deffenbaugh, just back from a trip to

Indonesia, returned to the Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series to win

Sunday’s main event, the Pro/Am Division.

Deffenbaugh scored a 9.5 on his fourth wave of the heat and went on to

best runner-up Chris Drummy to win the division and a $2,000 check.

Deffenbaugh was the division’s overall ratings points leader at the

conclusion of last year’s series, and thus, earned a round-trip ticket to

Indonesia.

He’s on track for a return trip, as the division’s ratings points

leader will be decided in October.

“I’m going to start saving for next year’s trip to Indonesia,”

Deffenbaugh said, when asked what he’d do with his winnings. “I just got

back last week and had the best time of my life. Hopefully, I can win the

overall Pro/Am ratings again this year, then, my whole trip will be paid

for.”

Other division winners included Brandon Guilmette (Juniors); Brandon

Long (Mens); Jason Haughey (Masters); Liz Kampen (Womens), and Steve

Newton (Longboard).

Jeff Hurley of Aliso Niguel won the XS City Airshow’s $500 prize.

“Jeff was by far the most consistent surfer in the air show final and

just edged out Brandon Guilmette for first place in the event,” Event

Director Seth Matson said.

“On Saturday, the competitors were surfing great in all divisions,

impressing the judges with many high scores of perfect tens. Sunday, was

even better, with the Pro/Am and the XS City Air show divisions

expressing themselves with an awesome display of explosive, radical and

controlled surfing.”
