All about The Camp in Costa Mesa

The Camp is a unique retail complex that caters to the outdoor

enthusiast, offering both food and gear for snow, surf, skate and

extreme sports. The center boasts award-winning modern architecture

in a campus-style setting.

An amphitheater was created for environmental speakers,

educational classes, sports and product demonstrations, athlete

appearances and special events. With its close proximity to The Lab

Anti-mall, which sits across the street, and to South Coast Plaza,

just a half mile north on Bristol Street, The Camp is in a premier

location.

The Camp, at 2937 Bristol St., has stores and studios dedicated to

everything from scuba diving to sports wear.

Bikram Yoga Center teaches the Bikram method of yoga, a series of

26 postures and two breathing exercises ideal for all ages and

ability levels. It’s one of the country’s leading yoga institutions.

All instructors at the center in The Camp are Bikram certified.

The studio is offering a holiday special: an annual membership for

$999 (regularly $1,500) if you join before Dec. 31. Single classes

are $15; a 10 class card is $125 (expires in one month); a 35 class

card is $350 (expires in 3 months); one month unlimited is $165; and

three month unlimited is $400. Classes are offered Monday through

Friday at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; Saturday at 8

a.m., 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The studio also sells yoga-related items: apparel, mats, water,

videos, books and an exclusive natural skin care line. Located in

Cycle Werks carries top brands in mountain and road bikes, and

guarantees to beat competitor’s prices. It’s known for its free

lifetime service -- that includes adjustments on gears, lube,

adjustments and cleaning. Top brands available are Trek, Gary Fisher,

Klein and Lemond. There’s a nice selection of apparel and shoes, with

a large selection of hard-to-find women’s pieces.

The staff gives a lot of attention to customers needs; they want

customers to be happy. No one works on commission.

Adventure 16 Outdoor & Travel Outfitters is a dream store for

adventurists. The store is conveniently organized in sections.

There’s a Patagonia store within Adventure 16 for clothing: mountain

wear, climbing, running, cycling, skiing and snowboarding. There’s

gear for camping, backpacking, hiking and climbing, from shoes to

travel luggage to travel books and maps.

Adventure 16 has outdoor-related items for everyone -- from tents

for making base camp at Mt. Everest to simple tents for the kid’s

summer camp. Look for the cool “Map on Demand” machine by National

Geographic that instantly prints custom 3-D tear-proof and waterproof

maps for $7.95. There’s also Ex Officio speed-dry travel underwear

for $16 and a big selection of items for rent -- tents, packs, ice

axes and crampons.

Ask for a wilderness outings schedule of classes and trips.

Adventure 16 offers guided backpacking, high sierra backpack

adventures, parent and kids outings, rock climbing, photography,

first aid, women-only trips and winter camping.

Billabong carries a full range of surf and skate related items for

all ages. The store even has a mini-half pipe that’s free to use, for

ages 4 and older.

There’s a big selection of surfboards, skateboards, clothing,

shoes, watches and sunglasses to chose from. Other brands available

at the store include Element, Vonzipper and T-shirts from lesser

known independent skateboard companies.

At first there was just The Lodge at The Camp, but now

restaurateurs Tim and Liza Goodell have also opened The Village

Bakery at The Camp.

The Goodells also own Aubergine in Newport Beach, Troquet at South

Coast Plaza, Red Pearl Kitchen in Huntington Beach and the Whist at

the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica.

The Village Bakery sells daily the rosemary/shallot, raisin/fennel

and Kalamata olive round sourdough breads served at their

restaurants. Fresh pastries, artisan breads, fine cheeses, coffee and

pre-made sandwiches are also available.

The Village Bakery is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday

Owner Joe Liburdi of Liburdi’s Scuba Center was content at his

popular Irvine store, yet was attracted to the concept of a one-stop

center for outdoor adventure retailers. So he moved to The Camp last

June.

Liburdi’s Scuba Center is an educational facility for everyone.

It’s the largest Professional Assn. of Diving Instructors training

facility in the world. The custom saltwater pool complete with a

life-like reef is used for underwater photography classes and scuba

certification.

The center carries top of the line scuba equipment; there are

Atomic regulators, Zeagie scuba gear, Excel and Henderson wetsuits,

Tusa and Aeris computers and snorkeling gear. Liburdi’s has a school

of underwater photography and offers tours to local and tropical

trips two to three times a year for photo workshops. The scuba center

is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
