Navy Lt. Cmdr. Geoffrey G. Herb,...

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Geoffrey G. Herb, son of Marjorie J. Smith-Mayer of

Newport Beach and Gene G. Herb of Laguna Niguel and a 1981 graduate

of Estancia High School, recently reported for duty at Pearl Harbor

in Hawaii with the U.S. Pacific Fleet ... Marissa Auerbach, daughter

of Steve and Mary Auerbach of Costa Mesa and a 10th-grader at Newport

Harbor High School, was recently accepted into the Harvard Summer

School program in Cambridge, Mass. Marissa Auerbach will spend eight

weeks living and studying on the Harvard campus ... UC Irvine’s

Thomas Carew, chairman of the department of neurobiology and behavior

and the Donald Bren professor of neurobiology and behavior; Donald

Saari, distinguished professor of economics and mathematics; Henry

Samueli, adjunct professor in electrical engineering and computer

science and co-founder and chairman of Broadcom; and Douglas Wallace,

the Donald Bren professor of biological sciences and molecular

medicine, were recently named to the American Academy of Arts and

Sciences. The academy is a 223-year-old academy of scientists,

scholars, businesspeople and academics. The professors were selected

because of the contributions they have made in their respective

fields ... Lisa Gerlach, a 2000 graduate of Newport Harbor High

School, recently graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree

in chemistry and biology from Chapman University. Gerlach will be

attending the veterinary school of medicine at UC Davis ... Yuko

Kida, Shugo Kirino, Kae Kotani, Ju Hyun Lee, Woo Rim Lee, Mark C.

Leones, Sarah E. Lomeli, Sui Fong Lui, Myra L. Lyon, Dane P.

McDougall, Hee Mang Moon, Severiano Morales, Ayako Mori, Linh T.

Nguyen, Ly M. Nguyen and Jeremy O. Nicholas, all of Costa Mesa, were

recently named to the Orange Coast College president’s list for

maintaining a 4.0 GPA during the 2003 fall semester.
