Saltus remains five back

Costa Mesa resident Bryan Saltus settled for a 1-over-par 71 and sits

in a three-way tie for 11th place at 5-under after Saturday’s third

round of the Asian Tour’s Omega Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf

Club’s Composite Course.

Saltus (66-68-71 -- 205), a Newport Harbor High product, enters

today’s final round five shots off the lead, the same position he

found himself entering the third round. James Kingston torched the

course for a 62 in his third round and sits in a three-way tie for

first at 10-under with Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez (65-64-71 -- 200)

and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (65-68-67 -- 200).

Twelve golfers are ahead of Saltus.

Kim lifts Vanguard

* BASKETBALL: Brian Kim hit 5 of 12 three-pointers en route to

scoring a game-high 17 points as the host Vanguard University men’s

basketball team sent Biola to its first loss this season following a

58-54 Golden State Athletic Conference victory Saturday.

Kevin Dalafu tallied 13 points and five assists while Tim Burnette

added 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Lions (5-3, 1-1 in

the GSAC), which preserved two one-point leads in the final 32

seconds.

Brandon Duplessie hit season highs in both points (nine) and

rebounds (nine) for the victors.

Dave Newkirk led the Eagles (7-1, 1-1) with 14 points.

Vanguard travels to face Cal State San Bernardino Dec. 14.

Sage Hill on streak

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team defeated Brethren

Christian, 5-0, and Westminster, 4-2, Saturday in the Westminster

tournament to advance to the final game Monday at 3:15 p.m. at

Westminster High.

Freshman Kellee Kim scored three goals against Brethren and added

one more against Westminster for the Lightning, who have won their

first four games of the season.

Emily Webb had two scores against Westminster, while Kara Percival

and Sara Montazami each had one.

Eagles rise to occasion

* SOCCER: Senior goalkeeper Marci Kirchberg made six saves to

highlight the defensive effort put forth by the Estancia High girls

soccer team, which tied Savanna, 0-0, to close the 12-team

Westminster tournament Saturday at Westminster High.

Senior sweeper and captain Elise Carroll led the defense for the

Eagles (2-1-1), who fell to Magnolia, 3-0, earlier Saturday.

Against Magnolia, Kirchberg stopped three shots in the first half

while Julia Tasedan made two saves after halftime.

Freshman forward Taylor Carpenter scored the winning goal in the

Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Santa Ana Valley to open the tournament,

which featured four groups of three teams, Friday.

The Eagles return to action against host La Quinta at 3:15 p.m.

Tuesday.

Lions clip Eagles

* BASKETBALL: The No. 2 ranked Vanguard University women’s

basketball team held off visiting Biola, 68-54, in Golden State

Athletic Conference action Saturday.

The Lions (6-1, 2-0 in the GSAC) led by as much as 21 points in

the second half, but Biola pulled it to within nine, 55-46, after a

three-pointer by Rochelle Crawford.

Vanguard’s Kelly Schmidt led all scorers with 24 points, while

going 14 for 16 from the free throw line.

Pirates capture third

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Lauren Stepanski led four Orange Coast

College women’s basketball players in double figures as the Pirates

earned an 81-53 victory over Cuesta in the third-place game of the

Cuesta tournament Saturday.

Stepanski had 18 points, while teammates Rhondi Naff (17), Crystal

McCormick (16) and Christen D’Alessandro (14) also produced to help

OCC improve to 5-4.

McCormick was named to the all-tournament team.

The Pirates return to action Dec. 17 when they play host to

Southwestern in the first round of the Coast Christmas Classic.

Dolphins deny Sea Kings

* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team battled

back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to take a brief two-point

lead, but host Dana Hills denied three scoring opportunities in the

final 30 seconds to secure a 44-43 nonleague victory Saturday.

With one second remaining, the Sea Kings (0-3) inbounded from the

baseline, but a Dolphins’ player tipped the pass away as time

expired.

Dana Hills’ Senior Brianna Mannaert, who stands 6-foot-3, led all

scorers with 25 points while junior Katie Schulte paced CdM with 11

points alongside teammate Megan Benbow, who added eight off the

bench.

Allie Duernberger and Sanya Wadhwa each finished with six points

while sisters Kristina and Andrea Wayte each grabbed four rebounds

for the Sea Kings, who begin pool play against Colton in the Duarte

tournament at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Duarte High.
