Delgado stars, pitches no-hitter

One of the key returning players for the Laguna Beach High softball team in 2006 is Lauren Delgado.

A senior right-handed pitcher, Delgado showed her leadership skills in two recent nonleague outings, as the Breakers blanked visiting Bolsa Grande, 4-0, on March 16, and then, the following day, took care of visiting St. Margaret’s, 2-0.

Delgado dominated the mound on both occasions.

First, she limited Bolsa Grande to a single hit while striking out 13 in the 4-0 win.

Offensively, she was equally as impressive, as she hit a double and home run and stole two bases.

Caitlyn Barretto also doubled in the win.

Thirteen proved to be a lucky number again for Delgado in the 2-0 win over St. Margaret’s, as that’s the number of Tartans she whiffed while recording her first no-hitter of the season.

Laguna handed the Tartans their first loss of the season and picked up its third win in five games to start the season.

But the Breakers also were no-hit by St. Margaret’s Annie Wilson, who struck out 11. Barretto’s baserunning led to one of Laguna’s two runs.

On Monday, Laguna wasn’t as fortunate in a nonleague game at Estancia. Despite scoring the first two runs, the Breakers were saddled with a 13-3 defeat.

The Eagles outhit Laguna, 13-4. Delgado also pitched in the game, but struggled on the mound due to an injury.

Laguna hosts Northwood today at 3 p.m. in Pacific Coast League action.
