2 arrested after fight at Costa Mesa bar

Two Costa Mesa men were arrested Tuesday night after allegedly attacking a man outside a local bar, police said. One of the men is a known gang member, according to police.

Police arrested Bobby Bonilla, 19, and Gilberto Gonzalez-Juarez, 30, at about 8:30 p.m. outside of El Toro Bravo, 739 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa.

The two men are accused of approaching a man who was in line to enter the club and of attempting to take his wallet, police said. During the altercation Bonilla allegedly hit the man in line and showed him something concealed in his waistband, which the man assumed was a gun, although that has not been confirmed, police said.

The man left the line and called police.

Bonilla is also accused of hitting a 13-year-old boy in the line while trying to take away the teenager’s MP3 player, according to Sgt. Marty Carver.

When police arrived, the man who called police pointed out his alleged attackers, Carver said. Bonilla ran away as officers arrested Juarez, police said. Another officer ran after Bonilla, who reportedly turned around and ran into the two officers handcuffing Juarez, police said.

Police say Bonilla is a known gang member and was being held Wednesday without bail due to a probation violation. Juarez was being held by immigration authorities, police said.
