BRIEFLY IN PUBLIC SAFETY

Three arrested in marijuana sting

Three Garden Grove men were arrested April 16 after allegedly trying to sell marijuana to a police informant in North Laguna Beach.

The informant met with one of the suspects at 10:20 p.m. to exchange $6,200 for two pounds of marijuana in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 600 block of No. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach Det. Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

During the meeting, police moved in and arrested three suspects on suspicion of sales of marijuana, a felony: Tony Nguyen, 22; Phong Nguyen (not related), 22; and Sonny Phammanivanh, 20. All the suspects were Garden Grove residents.

During a search of the suspects’ vehicle, a Silver 2006 Acura, two pounds of marijuana were found in a box on the back seat. All the suspects were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Orange County Jail.

Teen police academy begins Wednesday

The Laguna Beach Police Department’s Teen Academy, a four-week, eight-hour program for Laguna Beach High School students, will begin on April 25. The program had been postponed to allow more teens to enroll.

Laguna Beach officers will teach the course at Laguna Beach High School.

Classes include field operations, communications, crime scene investigation, investigations, district attorney’s office, a tour of the police department, officer safety issues and traffic and juvenile laws.

The program is intended to open the lines of communication and help explain why and how the police do their jobs.

Classes take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Students completing the program with no absences will earn eight hours of community service credit.
