Orange Coast 11, Saddleback 4COSTA MESA — Freshman Cory Olson was three for four with a home run, a triple and five RBIs in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference win Thursday at OCC.

Mike Ferraro was three for five with three runs and an RBI, and Chris Fung, Wes Kartch, Eric Oliver and Chris Lum all added two hits for Coast (20-16, 10-7 in conference). The Pirates stay in second place in conference with the win.

Freshman Matt Hauser, a Corona del Mar High product, improved to 2-3, giving up just one earned run over 6 innings against Saddleback (20-15, 7-10).

The Pirates play host to Irvine Valley on Saturday at noon.

Azusa Pacific 9, Vanguard 2COSTA MESA — Azusa Pacific handed the Lions their fifth loss in a row in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday at Vanguard.

Sophomore shortstop Zach Leighton was two for four with a run scored to lead Vanguard (20-19, 15-15 in conference), which fell behind 5-0 after two innings. Azusa Pacific (39-4, 27-3), ranked No. 2 in NAIA, won its program-record 19th game in a row.

Vanguard hosts Fresno Pacific in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.

Orange Empire ConferenceCOSTA MESA — Orange Coast College’s Jaleh Mazaheri earned a spot in the semifinals by topping Santa Ana’s Lisa Havich, 6-3, 6-2 at Orange Coast Thursday.

Championships

Mazaheri will face No. 1 seed Anabel Sanchez of Riverside today.

Mazaheri and her doubles teammate Heather Morton did not complete its semifinal match against Saddleback’s Nisa Meineke and Andrew Warren. It was stopped early in the third set due to darkness. They will continue their match today.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, Long Beach State 8IRVINE — Jackie Prine scored four goals to lead the No. 10-ranked Anteaters to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Thursday.

Robyn Kaake, Gianna Rossi, Alli Russell and Julia Fancher scored two goals each for UCI (17-19, 4-8 in MPSF).
