Harbor edges Los Al

SUNSET BEACH — The Newport Harbor High longboarders swept their event to help lead the surf team to a 77-69 win against Los Alamitos at Anderson Street in Sunset Beach Wednesday morning.

Newport Harbor (8-1) trailed, 63-62, before Aaron Cervantes scored a meet-high 6.63 average wave score, good enough to take first place in the longboard event to begin the Sailors’ surge. Cervantes was followed closely by Andy Delorme with a second-place score of 5.50. Taylor Patton’s 5.0 was good enough for third place as the longboard squad won, 15-6, to secure the team win.

Newport Harbor’s Shelby Detmers led the girls’ shortboard squad with a first-place finish. Teammates Elizabeth Eddy and Ali Hayes placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Joe Suzuki finished second and Yuji Kanbayashi finished in third place for Newport Harbor in the boys’ bodyboard event.

Newport Harbor’s Charlie Hawthorne and Jake Caughill finished second in their shortboard heats and Matt Porteous finished third in his heat.

Newport Harbor lost, 43-41, in the boys’ shortboard event, but Tommy Shaw and Rusty Sary placed second in their heats and Andrew Wilson finished third.
