High school golfers to vie for tourney’s top spot

Share

Teams of golfers from Costa Mesa High School, Corona Del Mar High School, Newport Harbor High School and Estancia High School will be among 20 Orange County schools competing Monday to qualify for the “Shot from the Top” event during the Toshiba Classic golf tournament.

The “closest to the pin” contest will have student athletes trying to get their golf balls as close as possible to the 18th hole of the Newport Beach Country Club.

The final event will have teams teeing off from the top of the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa, hitting down to the second green of the country club. That event will be held March 3 during the 2009 Toshiba Classic, with PGA Champions Tour professionals competing along with each of the eight finalist teams. The ultimate victors will win 25 laptop computers for their schools.

While not every school will make it to the final event, all will have something to show for it: Each team involved will win at least four laptop computers for its school.
