Health seminar with Dr. Bent is at Susi Q

Laguna Beach Seniors are proud to announce a free health seminar at 10 a.m. March 23, at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St. The seminar is titled “The 50,000 Mile Health Check-up for men and the people that love them.”

Dr. Thomas Bent, clinical medical director of the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, will share with the audience his health screening and monitoring recommendations that contribute to a high-performance body into the later years of life.

Bent will discuss high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, colon cancer and prostate cancer. He will explain the risk factors and the benefits of regular screening and decipher the cholesterol and the blood pressure numbers. He will also address the importance an active lifestyle combined with daily healthy habits.

Seniors’ art exhibit will be in April

Seniors 55 and older are invited to participate in the city of Laguna Beach and Community Art Project’s 2009 Senior Art Exhibit, from April 11 through 17 at Wells Fargo Bank, 260 Ocean Ave.

Entries will be accepted from residents of Orange County 55 or older as of Sept. 1. All entries must be original and have been executed within the last two years. Categories are: Two Dimensional (includes drawing and photography); Oils; Acrylics; Watercolors; and Multimedia.

Two-dimensional work must measure no more than 2 feet by 3 feet including the frame, and be no more than 3 inches in depth. No three-dimensional artworks will be accepted. The frame must be sturdy enough to support the art without buckling. The artwork must be ready for hanging with wire (no saw tooth hangers). An entry form must accompany each piece of artwork submitted. All artwork must be framed and ready for hanging.

Artworks may be submitted from 9 to 11 a.m. April 4 on the second floor of Wells Fargo Bank in Laguna Beach. A reception and awards ceremony will be from 11 a.m .to noon April 11 at Wells Fargo Bank.

Artwork must be picked up between 9 and 11 a.m. April 18.

St. Patrick’s Day lunch planned at Susi Q

Laguna Beach Seniors will hold a St. Patrick’s Day Lunch at 11:30 a.m. March 17 at the Susi Q Center, 380 Third St.

To attend, a $4 donation is required for those who are 60 and older, and the cost is $5.50 for those 59 and younger. The menu is corned beef sandwich on rye, split pea soup, coleslaw and pistachio pudding. First-time visitors to the Seniors Lunch program should call (949) 715-5462 by 5 p.m. Thursday to make a reservation.

Latin aerobic workout offered at Susi Q

The Susi Q Center is now offering free exercise classes with simple Latin dance steps. Participants dance to salsa, cha-cha, merengue, samba and rumba music in a non-partner workout class led by Sandra Casado.

The class is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays from March 24 to May 19 at 380 Third St. To enroll, call Irvine Valley College Emeritus at (949) 451-5382.
