“Potato chip, potato chip, crunch, crunch, crunch, we are going to eat the other team for lunch!”

That’s the cheer for the very young third- and fourth-grade St John’s gold team made up of mostly second- and third-graders. St. John’s had only enough players for one team at this grade level but the players have been golden and eating well.

On Wednesday they earned a 3-1 victory over a tough Kaiser team led by Zoe Conley, who challenged them all evening long. The day before the Irish girls managed a 4-2 win over a very strong and talented Our Lady Queen of Angels’ team in what looked like an upset.

In both games the Irish have played great defense led by Faith Harper, Julia Ware and Maile Novotny with support from by Lucy O’Hara and Chanel Pyburn. While they all played well, the defensive star in the first game was second-grade goalie Emma Warner, who had numerous saves against a relentless Angels’ assault.

The midfield has been covered by Megan Kelly, Camille Danner, Saide Blanco, Allison Sihilling and Janelle Maglione. On offense Julia Ware and Faith Harper have contributed out of the backfield and helped Julia Barajas pull off a hat trick in the first game. In the second game, Gretchen Shoenberger, Emilie Leath and Meagan Kelly all stepped up to provide the offensive fire power needed to pull off a victory.

St. Joachim 2 Newport Coast 0: It was an exciting first half for St Joachim in this pool-play game. Sianna Siemonsma perfectly centered the ball from the right corner, Lexi Van Oostendorp passed back to Claudia Bays who sent the ball beautifully into the goal. Then a fierce battle in the midfield ensued with all players getting a foot on the ball. Isabella Segovia working hard on the right, Mollie Allred pushing the ball forward on the left and Elizabeth Lyons in the center. When the ball advanced past midfield Emily Armijo, Mollie Crook and Isabella Patrick worked to protect the goalie. Goalie Alex Garces-Saldana was there to shut out Newport Coast. The first half ended well for St Joachim when Claudia Bays took the ball from midfield straight down and drilled it into the goal. The second half began with a penalty kick that again Garces-Saldana was able to block. Goalie Mollie Crook was protected in the second by Julia Gregory, Hailey Macias and Alyssa Holmberg providing great defense. Rachel Del Valle advanced the ball as left forward with Marley Presiado on the right. Sianna and Emily had a few more shots on goal. All played hard and were very pleased with a great game and a nice win.

Lacy Yonkers scored four goals for St. Joachim in a pool-play game.

Mariners Christian went up early 2-0 in the first half with several long shots on goal from their star forwards against the Sea Kings. After the Sea Kings settled in the offensive exploded with four unanswered goals by Yonkers, a center forward.

“It was the passing from Melissa Machuca, Carly Van Oostendorp, Megan Deagan and of course Emily Rodriguez that allowed me to find the net,” Yonkers said. “We are a team”.

Kate Lyons had another solid performance including a late penalty kick she denied in the waning minutes of the game from her goalie position. Hannah Sanders continued her breakout play on defense making key play at critical times.

St. Joachim 3, Lincoln Elementary 1: Both teams had a great offensive and defensive line-up. The Sea Kings defense, led by keeper Carter Chapman, sweepers Cole Kinder, Sam Miller, and Michael Lehman, kept the Lincoln offense on their toes. These boys sent the ball to the offense several times with many great attempts by Cole Schattinger, Ryan De Valle, Spencer Morrison, Hunter Hall and Chandler Siemonsma. Schattinger, assisted by Siemonsma, finally made the first goal. At the half, the score was 1-0, with a few players on both sides taking some tough spills. The teams came out strong after the half with DJ Van Oostendorp and Jake Thomas of St Joachim working their offensive magic. Chapman saved the St. Joachim team by defending the goal during a penalty kick. Lincoln then turned around and scored. Cole McFetters countered by centering the ball to Siemonsma, who swooped in for the second goal. Both teams continued their hard work. The final goal of the game came when Siemonsma took a penalty kick and scored. The teams continued to both fight hard until the whistle blew.

St. Joachim 1, Mariners Christian 1: St. Joachim struck first with a goal by Vincent Rubino, assisted by Carter Bays. Ian Hansen kept the goal safe for the entire first half for the Sea Kings. Power kicks by Christopher Cornell and Conrad Armijo and a strong defense by Aaron and Quinn Monahan helped hold Mariners Christian to a tie at the end of first half. St. Joachim’s strong defensive unit of Domenic Christiansen, Tommy Hanle, Chad Gaitan and goal keeping by Matthew Ingram stopped a last minute Mariners Christian rally.
