Travel medicine lecture set

Dr. Thomas Bent, head of the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, will speak from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the Susi Q, 380 Third St., on the topic of Travel Medicine.

Items to be discussed include routine immunizations, special immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, altitude sickness prevention, a brief summary of bacterial and parasitic stomach infections, and how to stay healthy on cruise ships.

Old fashioned sing-a-long

Those who love to sing are invited to gather around the piano with Steve Lawless and Jeanine Just from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Susi Q Senior Center.

Lawless plays piano and Just leads singers in Broadway favorites, love songs and old standards. For reservations, call (949) 497-2441. Admission is $5.

Wine tasting kicks off summer at Susi Q

Laguna Beach Seniors will celebrate the start of summer with a wine-tasting at the Susi Q from 6 to 8:30 p.m. June 26. Bree Burgess Rosen “” of “Lagunatics” fame “” a certified sommelier, will host the event.

Rosen is partnering with Stephen Jacobs of Laguna Gourmet to present a “Diva’s Dozen” “” 12 affordable wines from around the world. The cost is $15, and guests will get a “Susi Q-pon” for a 20% discount on a case of wine at Laguna Gourmet. Space is limited, so call (949) 497-2441. There is parking in the garage beneath the center.

Duo of flutists to perform at Susi Q.

Laguna Silver Flutes, a duo of two flutists, will play from 12:30 to 1 p.m. June 26 at the Susi Q. Betsy Foster is the principle flutist with the Laguna Community Concert Band and Betty Everett plays in the second row.

Foster has a degree in music education from Westchester University in Pennsylvania and plays with the Bolling League, a quartet that specializes in the music of the French jazz composer Claude Bolling, and the Orange County Wind Ensemble.

Everett earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary creative arts, with emphasis on music. She has studied classical vocal music in Europe. Currently, she plays with the Laguna Community Concert Band as well as the Cal State Fullerton Flute Ensemble.

The program will include rags by Scott Joplin, arranged for two flutes, the operas of Bizet and Rossini arranged for two flutes and other possible early era songs.

Susi Q Book Club to meet on ‘The Reader’

The Susi Q Book Club will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. July 2 to discuss Bernard Schlink’s “The Reader.” The moderator is Judy Shields. This group meets the first Thursday of each month. For more information, call Phyllis Wilson at (949) 497-7170.

Ballroom dancing classes offered

Classes in ballroom dancing will begin June 29 and continue for six consecutive Mondays, ending Aug. 3. Classes are from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Susi Q Senior Center. The cost is $5 per session.

A partner is not required. Attendees will be able to vote on what dances they would like to learn. Everything from slow to quick, ballroom to Latin will be offered. The class is being taught by Candi Davis, who has 35 years of experience and teaches at several senior centers in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. To sign up, call (949) 497-2441.
