Edward Martindale

80, Valley Center, CA.

Ed was born on March 7, 1929 in Canoga Park and passed

away on June 18th after a courageous one year battle with

cancer. He settled in Newport Beach in the early 50’s and

was drawn to Newport because of memorable visits to his

grandparent’s bay front beach house during his youth. In

1953, Ed founded Mameco Engineering in Newport Beach

with best friend Ted Mangels who he bought out several

years later. Originally they hoped to build high performance

cars and campaigned a race car for Glaspar, but it soon

became evident that there was a much bigger demand for

products manufactured for the yachting industry. Nevertheless,

Ed was always interested in supplementing his core business

with fun projects which resulted in Mameco’s slogan,

“adult toy makers”. Martindale was involved in developing

the Meyers Manx dune buggy, built the first Autopia cars for

Disneyland and was often found working on early off-road

race cars. Not surprising, Ed had a passion for all types of car

races. He liked to spend his leisure time traveling to Baja for

off-road races, camping, and spending time at family retreats

in Oregon and Idyllwild. He was also a member of the

Newport Harbor Yacht Club. After nearly 40 years Mameco

Engineering closed in the early 90’s and Ed retired to the

“country life” in San Diego County.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Suzanne;

son, Marty; stepsons, Jeff, Bruce and Ken Wilson and five

grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Myrna and

brother, John. Ed was preceded in death by another son,

Jim. Private family services are pending. In lieu of flowers,

donations can be made in his name to the American Cancer

Society or a charity of your choice.
