Small tsunami waves reached Newport Beach on Saturday afternoon, after traveling some 6,000 miles from the site of a magnitude-8.8 earthquake off the coast of Chile.

The National Weather service issued a low-level tsunami advisory for the California coastline after the earthquake.

The surf in Newport was out of the southwest Saturday afternoon, with 1- to 2-foot swells and reports of the occasional 4- to 6-foot swell, Newport Beach Lifeguard Capt. Boyd Mickley said Saturday.

Newport Beach police patrolled beaches to let people know about the tsunami advisory.

A 1.4-foot tsunami was reported in San Diego around noon on Saturday, which continued its way up the California coastline.

The tsunami reached its highest recorded levels at Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, where 2.3-foot swells were reported, according to the National Weather Service.

Newport Beach residents and businesses received automated phone calls on Saturday advising them to stay away from coastal areas as part of the AlertOC emergency notification system.

No property damage or injuries were reported in connection with the small tsunami waves, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Burdette said.
