Electrical vault fire causes power outage

An underground electrical vault caught fire at 2:52 a.m. Sunday on South Coast Highway at Legion Street, causing a power outage for 2,126 customers in a large swath of downtown Laguna Beach, said Southern California Edison spokeswoman Vanessa McGrady.

Power to all but 80 customers was restored by 10:53 a.m. Sunday. The remainder of the customers had their power restored by 10 a.m. Monday.

The incident resulted from a “failed underground connector” due to an unknown cause, McGrady said. The power outage affected customers in an area bounded by Monterey Drive in North Laguna to Mountain Road on the south; and from Wilson Street on the east to Cliff Drive on the west, she said.
