DUI checkpoint scheduled for Saturday

Newport Beach police will be conducting a DUI checkpoint Saturday at Dover Drive and 16th Street.

From 7:30 p.m. to 3 a.m., police will be stationed on northbound Dover Drive stopping drivers to educate them on the dangers of drinking and driving and to check for drunk or unlicensed drivers.

Police said the checkpoint was selected because its nearby bars and restaurants. The stops are aimed at educating the public and reminding the public of the laws, rather than catching drunk drivers. Police typically use saturation patrols where more officers are patrolling for drunk drivers when they want to make arrests.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
