Heisler project breaking ground

The final phase of a master plan to preserve and renovate Heisler Park for the next 50 years will begin construction Monday. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Monday near the gazebo, according to city officials.

The $2.4 million project involves three areas: the Diver’s Cove stairway at the northern end of the park; the Monument Point area; and the North Main Beach area. The Diver’s Cove and the North Main Beach areas should be completed before the end of the year. The Monument Point area will be completed by the end of May 2011. The Rockpile Beach and Picnic Beach areas that were renovated in 2008 will remain open to the public during the project.

The project will replace the shuffleboard courts with a “terraced garden” that will provide a new community gathering area; provide two new seating areas, one near Monument Point, and the other above North Main Beach; replace beach stairs near the gazebo and at Monument Point; recontour pathways; provide more public art. In addition, new drainage, irrigation and landscaping will be installed to reduce water use and erosion, among other improvements.

This final phase of the renovation will conclude an $8 million renovation to Heisler Park. Funding is provided by $4.5 million of grants and about $3.5 million of city funds.
