A HIP Halloween planned

Businesses along Laguna’s HIP district, the South Coast Highway commercial area between Thalia Street and Bluebird Canyon Drive, are joining together to offer shoppers a slew of Halloween treats from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 30.

Some of the specials include:

The Rooftop Lounge: Buy one appetizer get one free;

K’ya Bistro Bar: Free “small plate” card valued at $10 with proof of receipt of purchase from any HIP District store dated Oct. 30;

Laguna Beach Books: A mysterious box arrived full of goodies, and customers are invited to come by and pick up a free gift with purchase while supplies last;

SOHO by the Sea: Half off Brazilian blowouts and half off color;

Chocolate Soldier: Costume contest at 2:30 p.m. with a goody bag awarded to the scariest and the funniest costumes;

Artist Eye Gallery: Complimentary refreshments;

Studio Arts Gallery: Halloween toys for children 9 and younger;

The Old Pottery Place: “Best Dressed Pet Contest” from 1 to 3 p.m., with complimentary photo supplied by White Blossoms of Laguna and treats from Bark & Sniff Boutique;

Laguna Nursery: Pumpkin decorating from noon to 3 p.m. with best pumpkin winning $200;

Bark & Sniff Boutique: Complimentary Halloween photo and free cookies for dogs from noon to 6 p.m.;

Tootsies: Free gift with purchase while supplies last, noon to 6 p.m.;

Trash Pretty: Pumpkin carving contest from 3 to 6 p.m. plus complimentary refreshments. The winner of “best pumpkin” gets a $25 gift certificate and the first 10 people receive a free pumpkin. Bring your own carving supplies.

Comic store holds Halloween events

Sergio Aragones, known as the fastest cartoonist in the world, will make an appearance and sign his new book at Hi De Ho Comics on Oct. 30.

The store will also sponsor a watermelon carving contest on that day. Patrons can bring in a carved watermelon instead of a pumpkin. The winner will get a $50 gift certificate to Hi De Ho Comics and all kids younger than 12 with an entry get a free comic and goody bag. There is no cost to enter. Judges will award prizes.

Business workshop set

The city of Laguna Beach is sponsoring another “Open for Business” workshop for business owners and others interested in opening or expanding businesses in Laguna Beach.

The workshop will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in the Laguna Beach Community Center, 380 Third St.

“We are reaching out to business owners, building owners, commercial realtors and other professionals to let everyone know that we want to help entrepreneurs realize their vision in Laguna Beach,” said Mayor Elizabeth Pearson.

Workshop participants will include members of the City’s Planning Commission, key city staff, Chamber of Commerce officials and successful local business owners, according to Planning Commissioner Anne Johnson, who is helping to organize the meetings.
