Rosemary Tilt Jones

Rosemary Tilt Jones passed away at her home in Balboa, CA on Thursday, October
21, 2010. Rosemary, known as “Rosie,” was born May 21, 1930, the daughter of Ned
Bass Tilt and Rosemary “Posie” Miller Tilt of Pasadena, CA.
Rosie attended Arroyo Seco School, Polytechnic School, class of 1945, and
graduated from the Westridge School in Pasadena as a member of the class of 1948.
She then attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY and earned an associates
degree at Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, CA in Horticultural Design.
In 1952, Rosie married Graham “Beezie” McClinton Jones, the son of Thaddeus
Crane Jones Jr. and Agnes McClinton Jones of Pasadena, CA. After marriage, they
initially resided in Pasadena, but moved to Balboa, CA in 1957. They raised three
children, Laura McClinton Jones Tomlinson (Charles) of Centennial, CO, Rosemary
“Allie” Jones Dewey (Brian) of Centennial, CO, and Whitney Edward “Ned” Jones of
Newport, RI. Her four grandchildren, Ned, Annie, Graham, and Sabra, all reside in CO.
Rosie followed in her husband’s footsteps by developing a keen interest in sailing
with time spent cruising on the family sloop, first the “Sanguine”, the “Halcyon”, and then
the “Raven”. She sailed competitively from time to time and was chosen to race in the
prestigious Adams Cup regatta in Connecticut as well as racing in Mother??s Sabots for
many years at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
Rosie??s favorite past time was her passion for horticulture. She was a secondgeneration
member and past president of the Digger’s Garden Club in Pasadena and an
approved Judge of Horticulture as well as a past member of the Board of Directors of
the Garden Club of America. Rosie mentored, judged, designed, propagated, and was
involved in horticulture conservation. Her presence and expertise was always in
demand in horticulture circles across the country. At the end of the day, she loved to
tend to her own garden and share her wealth of knowledge. To know her was to love
her.
Rosie was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Edward Tilt and by her husband
Beezie Jones.
Services will be held Saturday November 6 at 11:00 at St. James Church, Newport
Beach, CA. Contributions in Rosie’s memory may be made to the Huntington Botanical
Garden, The
