Donate snacks, stockings to troops

Help send troops a bit of holiday cheer by donating items for Christmas stockings.

John R. Peterson Elementary School, Huntington Beach Cub Scout Pack 290 and the YMCA are partnering with a military-outreach nonprofit to assemble stockings full of treats for troops stationed in Afghanistan over the holidays.

They are looking for donations of Christmas stockings and items to fill them with, like candy canes, hard candies, beef jerky, Starbucks Via coffees, peanut butter cracker snack packs, Cup Noodles, tuna and cracker snack packs, gum, dried fruits, nuts, trail mix, sunflower seeds, corn nuts, cheese and cracker snack packs, Nature Valley Sweet & Salty peanut bars, Gatorade Propel, and Quaker oatmeal breakfast bars.

Cotton socks, pocket-sized packages of baby wipes and letters or Christmas cards addressed to "Dear Armed Forces" are also needed.

Donations can be accepted through Thursday, when students will assemble the stockings.

Residents can drop off donations at Peterson YMCA at 20661 Farnsworth in Huntington Beach.
