Will and Kate plus cake

COSTA MESA — A six-tier wedding cake, created by a Costa Mesa bakery and adorned with 500 hand-crafted edible flowers, will be featured on an upcoming episode of “Access Hollywood.”

One could say that the 6-foot sculpted, sugary masterpiece by Costa Mesa restaurateur Chris Russom, of Christopher Garren’s Cakes, is fit for a princess.

That’s because it is.

Russom designed the confection to match the china rumored to be selected for the wedding of British royal Prince William and his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton.

While the cake won’t actually be for the famous couple — it will be on a Los Angeles-area studio Thursday — it will give the American audience a better idea of what the British royals have in store for the much-publicized, yet secret, wedding plans.

“This is a young couple,” Russom said of his artistic process behind creating the cake. “It was a long time ago when Diana married Charles — they had 27 cakes. In keeping with British tradition, it is regal, conservative, but still young and lively.”

“This is not the Queen’s cake,” he added.

“Access Hollywood” won’t be Russom’s first TV appearance. His creations, which have been commissioned by Vera Wang, Louis Vuitton and Snoop Dogg, have appeared on the “Amazing Wedding Cakes” reality-TV show.

The cakes average between $15,000 and $20,000.

“It’s going to be spectacular,” said Patricia Russom of her son’s royal cake. “It’s something you would only dream about.”

Russom expects that the episode will be aired on NBC-4 Channel 4 on Thursday night or soon thereafter.
