Irvine police have identified the suspected gunman and the victim in Thursday’s fatal shooting in the Turtle Rock area as an estranged couple from Orange.

John Rand Agosta, 35, was arrested in Mission Viejo and booked late Thursday afternoon for allegedly killing his estranged wife, Alejandra Hernandez, 29, Irvine police said.

Agosta’s motive was unclear, according to a police news release.

The shooting occurred about 2 p.m. in the 18000 block of Via Siena near Turtle Rock Elementary School, said Irvine Unified School District spokesman Ian Hanigan.

The school, which had no students at the time, was placed on lockdown and teachers were escorted out of the school individually by police officers, Hanigan said.

Hernandez was an employee of a private daycare center near the school, according to the release.

Paramedics attended to Hernandez when they arrived, but she died at the scene, the release said. Agosta was taken to Orange County Jail, Lt. Julia Engen said.
