Program eases first-day-of-school nerves

With the end of summer around the corner, Newport Elementary School faculty introduced themselves to their newest class as part of a program easing students back into school.

Called Big Thursday, students registered for classes, met their teachers and took a tour of the school Thursday.

School officials said they also paired new families with returning ones to calm the kids’ nerves. The program is in its second year and school staff say it’s easier on new students when they already know someone heading into their first day.

Newport Elementary begins its school year Tuesday.
