FRED ALLEN HOWSER
November 6, 1936 – September 11, 2011

Fred passed away peacefully last Sunday, September 11, 2011 due to a complexity of medical issues. He was born November 6, 1936 in Long Beach, CA as the only child of Fred N. Howser and Helen Howser. He grew up in Long Beach and Arcadia and attended Webb High School. He graduated from USC Law School and began a 30+ year career as an attorney in Newport Beach at Howser, Gertner & Brown. He was loved by many people given his open arms and willingness to help anyone at anytime. Whether you knew him as “Fred”, “Fritz”, “Uncle Fish”, “Papa Fred”, “Counselor”, “El Jefe”, “Mother Howser” or “Dad”, he loved you and you loved him. Fred was a forefather of “making plans” to get his long time USC friends together by organizing an annual Mexico Fishing Trip that went on for over 50 years. He loved his children and organized the famous “Father-Son Fishing Trips” to Big Bear for many years that eventually evolved into the “Father-Son & Daughters Fishing Trip” and days at the “Horse Races”. He was still organizing Hunting Trips to Canada and Mexico this year to get people together to enjoy each others’ company. He was an avid cook as many of his friends knew often putting on a meal for many that could not be matched. Whether it was a “Duck Dinner”, “Lobster Thermadore” or the “Big Thick One”, no one went hungry. He was known in every grocery store in town due to his almost daily trips in preparation of the next big meal production of not one meat but two or even three choices so that everyone had something they liked to eat. You couldn’t miss Fred sitting in his front yard getting a tan, garage door up giving a friendly wave or available with an open ear if you needed it. Fred loved being on the Ocean as well whether he was cranking on an albacore or just enjoying Cherry Cove at Catalina. He was a great Dad to his three children – Donelle, Fritz and Peter, and will be dearly missed by them. Growing up, he would make breakfast for them on a daily basis and have their lunches ready for school. He was very supportive of all his children by going to football games, track meets, horse shows, polo matches, and he continued this tradition with all of his grandchildren. Fred always made you feel truly welcome in the sincerest way. He is survived by his family that includes – Dr. Donelle Laughlin Family (Husband Peter, Grandson Wyatt and Granddaughters Dalan & Keely), Fritz Howser Family (Wife Patsy, Grandson Fritz & Granddaughter Peri), Peter Howser Family (Wife Sienna, Grandson Henry & Granddaughters Scarlet & Coco), Michelle Somers Family (Husband John, Grandnephew Jack and Grandniece Annie), Cousins Sally & Kenny Stead.

At Fred’s request, the family is having a “family only” celebration in the near future. He appreciates all the support and friendships he enjoyed throughout his life.
