New executive chef at Tabu Grill

There’s a new man behind the menu at Tabu Grill.

Joshua Hasho has been named the new executive chef of the Laguna beach restaurant. Hasho’s previous experience includes work as the chef de cuisine at The Ritz-Carlton in Marina Del Rey, according to a news release.

Some of Hasho’s dishes include: short ribs with goat cheese polenta, kale, rosemary crunch and lemon tempura; rib-eye with mesquite-smoked bacon and Brussels sprout hash, celery root, whiskey-braised onions and horseradish butter; and seared tenderloin of pork, according to the news release.

Hasho has been interested in cooking since an early age, when he watched cooking shows like the “The Frugal Gourmet” with his dad. After graduating high school in Michigan, he went straight into a culinary arts program.

“I like to describe my style as a refined rustic cuisine with influences brought by the changing of the seasons and multicultural flavors,” Hasho said in a statement.

Montage hosts tree lighting ceremony

The holiday season launches in Laguna Beach with a holiday tree-lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Montage Laguna Beach hotel.

The ceremony doubles as an open house for the community and includes carolers, pictures with Santa, the unveiling of the resort’s gingerbread village and fun activities for children. Seasonal beverages and food will be available as well.

State Chamber of Commerce lauds Harman’s work

The California Chamber of Commerce recently recognized State Sen. Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach) for his pro-business record in its 2011 Legislative Scorecard.

Harman represents the 35th Senatorial District, which includes Laguna Beach.

The Chamber applauded his efforts to support legislation that helped create jobs and oppose items that killed jobs, according to a news release.

“Bringing jobs to California is my top legislative priority,” Harman said in a prepared statement. “Fighting unnecessary regulations, fees, taxes and the other business-busting policies is a must if we are serious about getting Californians back to work.”

Shelter’s gala raises more than $100K

A record-breaking crowd attended the Laguna Beach-based Friendship Shelter’s annual gala Nov. 4 and pledged more than $100,000 to support shelter programs, according to a news release.

The event at Balboa Bay Club & Resort in Newport Beach had a Beatles theme, “Come Together,” and included silent and live auctions. The funds raised from the auctions, ticket sales and sponsorships more than doubled the previous record.

“We were thrilled with these results,” Executive Director Dawn Price said in a statement. “In every way, this year’s gala was a significant step forward for Friendship Shelter. We set records for attendance and funds raised, and if we could measure fun I’m sure we set the record for that, too.”

At the dinner, Price honored Kathleen Able and Jill Edwards as outstanding community leaders for their work and commitment to the shelter. Also, Greg and Barbara MacGillivray and their One World One Ocean campaign were honored as outstanding business/community leaders, according to the news release.
