Man convicted for fight at Mutt Lynch’s

A Riverside man was convicted Friday of four felonies stemming from a 2008 bar fight that involved a bartender being attacked with brass knuckles at Mutt Lynch’s in Newport Beach.

Bobby Angel Alvarez, 27, was found guilty of two felonies of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, felony battery with serious bodily injury and possession of a deadly weapon, according to a court clerk.

Connected to the case was Richard Anthony Fuentes, 28, who was found not guilty on three similar felony counts.

Alvarez and Fuentes were accused of attacking a bartender at the Balboa Peninsula bar and restaurant when confronted about breaking glasses while drinking with a larger crowd in August of 2008.

Alvarez then smashed a beer bottle on the bartender’s head and used brass knuckles to punch him.

Fuentes was accused of punching the man in the face, breaking a pool stick, then swinging it around at people.

The bartender, Shane Kral, 41, said on Friday that the verdict was a mixed blessing.

“[I’m] slightly disappointed, but slightly relieved,” Kral said. “I can at least kind of move on now.”

Kral said he still suffers from migraines and visits an Oceanside clinic every three months because of the pain he has since the fight. He also said he missed spending time with his newborn because of his migraines.

Sentencing for Alvarez is scheduled for Jan. 27.

Kral said he plans to seek a civil suit against the two men.
