Shots fired in Costa Mesa Denny's parking lot

Police received a disturbance call Saturday morning in a parking lot behind a Costa Mesa Denny's restaurant, and minutes later it was reported that shots were fired and several cars were seen driving quickly from the area, Costa Mesa police said.

When police arrived at 3170 Harbor Blvd., they found evidence of a shooting, but no victims were at the location.

Through an investigation, police found two gunshot victims at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital they believe were injured in the shooting, said Costa Mesa police Lt. Mark Manley.

One of the victims had gunshot wounds to the chest, police said. He was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in critical condition.

The second victim was treated and released for a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

The cause of the incident was unclear, but may have been gang or drug related, according to police. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Mike Delgadillo at (714) 754-5197 or Sgt. Ed Everett at (714) 754-5395.
