Briefly In Education: Junior Curators put together ‘Layers of Life’ show

The Junior Curators team from Laguna Outreach for Community Arts has installed its first juried exhibition show on display through March 3 at the Laguna Beach Public Library.

The show, called “Layers of Life,” features 30 works from Laguna Beach High School students.

LOCA’s Junior Curators team this year includes six LBHS students: Shannon Adams, Vivian Mendoza, Zac Richner, Kennedy Gherardini, Samantha Sullivan and Sylvi Lyster. They chose the pieces to put on display and organized them in the children’s wing of the library

The collection includes photography, watercolors and cutouts, and all the artwork is child-friendly.

The library is at 363 Glenneyre St.

District seeks funding for science program

The Laguna Beach Unified School District is hoping to raise money for the science program at Laguna Beach High School.

SchoolPower’s annual Fund-A-Need is on now, with the goal of raising $68,100 for upgrades and additions to lab equipment for science classrooms.

“There is a great demand for science majors that the U.S. is not meeting. By getting students out of their textbooks and ‘Into the Lab,’ we can help them embrace science — whether for just their high school years or their life’s work,” SchoolPower President Marcus Skendarian said in a statement.

SchoolPower is encouraging residents donate to the cause now or at SchoolPower’s annual dinner dance March 3.

Workshop will educate parents about ‘digital age’

The school district is hosting a presentation, “Parenting 2.0: Parenting in the Digital Age,” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Artists’ Theatre at LBHS.

The workshop will include topics relevant to parents regarding the effects of technology and the Internet on their kids.

“Our Parenting 2.0 workshop series is designed to help parents and guardians understand the challenges that their children face online, while providing tools and resources to help guide, monitor and protect their children when using new technological resources,” Victor Guthrie, district director of Educational Technology and Information Services, said in a statement.

The presentation will be led by police Det. Natalie Leal, Thurston Middle School’s Assistant Principal Mike Modeer, LBHS Assistant Principal Bob Billinger and Guthrie.
