Police: Driver causes three-car crash

A man who appeared to be driving the wrong way on Newport Boulevard caused a three-car crash that sent him to the hospital, police said.

The driver of a red Toyota Yaris was in the northbound lanes of Newport Boulevard heading south about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

The Yaris crashed into a pickup truck, which another car then rear-ended, Lowe said.

The driver of the Yaris sustained serious injuries and was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. His condition was unknown Monday morning, according to Lowe.

The drivers of the two other vehicles sustained minor injuries, police said. There were no arrests made in connection to the crash, which is still under investigation.
