Couple arrested on suspicion for attempted murder

Two Santa Ana residents were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with an April incident in which a Costa Mesa man was seen knocking on doors and telling residents he was being chased, police said.

Jessica Gascon, 18, and her 17-year-old boyfriend, were arrested by Costa Mesa police on suspicion of luring Gascon’s ex-boyfriend, a 20-year-old Costa Mesa resident, to the area of Maple and Wilson streets.

It was there where the 17-year-old tried to shoot the victim, Costa Mesa police said Wednesday.

Police believe the 17-year-old was jealous of the man’s continued relationship with Gascon, and planned to kill him. Gascon allegedly lured the Costa Mesa man to the area, but upon arriving, the victim noticed the boy’s vehicle driving away, police said.

Two suspects then confronted the man, and the 17-year-old allegedly began firing at him, police said.

One of the bullets hit a nearby home, but no one inside was injured.

The Costa Mesan man ran away from the gunman, and knocked on doors in the area saying he was being chased, police said.

The boy is affiliated with a Santa Ana-based gang, but the shooting wasn’t gang motivated, police said.

Gascon is being held in Orange County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. Police are still searching for the second suspect who confronted the man.
