A driver going 80 mph southbound on North Coast Highway through north Laguna Beach early Sunday morning lost control of his vehicle, which hit a curb, flipped several times and skidded on its roof across South Coast Highway before coming to a rest, causing the highway to be shut down, according to police.

Josue Meza, a 22-year-old Tustin resident who had to be pried from the vehicle and transported to Mission Hospital Mission Viejo, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Police said Meza was approaching Ocean Avenue when he locked the wheel and lost control, causing the vehicle to hit the west curb at Main Beach and become airborne.

The vehicle then flipped several times, and slid on its roof across South Coast Highway, before stopping at Park Avenue, near the White House restaurant.

Laguna police and fire immediately responded. Meza had cuts on his head and was treated by the Fire Department.

All lanes of South Coast Highway were blocked due to heavy debris on the road, police said.

The highway was reopened at 5 a.m.
