Administrator Susan V. Bryant has been named the interim executive vice chancellor and provost at UC Irvine.

Bryant, a biologist, will replace Michael R. Gottfredson, who is leaving to assume the position of president of the University of Oregon on Aug. 1. She begins her role July 9, according to a press release.

Bryant has been with UCI since 1969. Between 1973 and 2010, she’s held the positions of vice chancellor of research and dean of biological sciences.

Chancellor Michael Drake noted that Bryant is an expert in the realms of limb regeneration and her research has been noted in more than 100 publications.

“Susan Bryant is an outstanding leader, scientist, teacher and administrator,” Drake said in a statement. “In addition, she is a champion of initiatives that improve our university and community, from stem cell research to gender and diversity equity in the sciences. She arrived in Irvine as a young faculty member when the campus was just four years old, so she understands UC Irvine as well as anyone.”

Bryant earned her Ph.D. at the University of London. She is a member of Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and of the California Council on Science and Technology.

“Mike Gottfredson built an impressive legacy of high-quality education, and I plan to extend this commitment to excellence, working closely with my colleagues to enhance UC Irvine’s position as one of the premier universities in the world,” Bryant said in a statement.
