Briefly In Education: District receives high testing marks

The Laguna Beach Unified School District received high test scores on the California Standards Test, according to a press release.

The district achieved a base Academic Performance Index (API) score of 904, which surpassed the California benchmark of excellence of 800.

"Laguna Beach Unified School District continues its upward trajectory, thanks to a strong, visionary school board, excellent principals, outstanding teachers, staff and students who are supported by our families and community," Supt. Sherine Smith said in a statement.


Senior receives Business Club scholarship

Laguna Beach High School senior Bailey Romatoski received the Laguna Beach Business Club Entrepreneurial Scholarship, according to a news release.

A singer, songwriter, piano teacher and web/graphic designer, Bailey will receive $1,000 toward tuition at the Art Institute of California, where she plans to study industrial design.

"We were looking for a student with a track record of entrepreneurial drive, successes, resilience, and just as importantly, compassion for others," Melissa Almon, LBBC scholarship committee member, said in a statement. "Bailey had all those qualities and more."


Wyland hosts contest for kids

Local artist Wyland hosted a group of kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach-TLC Branch in May as part of an ocean-themed art contest, according to a press release.

The kids drew whales while whale watching at Dana Point Harbor.

Kylee Fredericks, 11, took first place, and won a gift certificate to the Wyland Gallery, the release said.

Local earns highest Scout honor

Zane Cornwell of Boy Scout Troop 35 in Laguna Beach earned scouting's highest rank of Eagle Scout, according to a press release.

Zane is the son of Kelly and Shelley Arends Cornwell.

He earned 23 merit badges and provided more than 200 hours of community service along the trail to Eagle Scout.

For his Eagle Scout service project, Zane raised money, designed, constructed and delivered a large trophy and storage armoire for the Laguna Beach Little League, the release said. The armoire is located in the Board Room at Riddle Field.

Zane, who graduated from high school earlier this month, plans to attend the Professional Aviation Program at Utah State in the fall.
