News radio station to showcase Irvine

KNX 1070 will take a closer look at the city of Irvine on Aug. 24, broadcasting live from the Irvine Spectrum as part of its “KNX on Your Corner” series.

Streaming from the Corner Bakery Café at 91 Fortune Drive, the segment will focus on major issues and success stories Irvine’s had over the past 30 years.

Featuring guest appearances from community leaders and city officials, including Mayor Sukhee Kang, the program will look specifically at the city’s growth and future plans, in addition to its places of interests, such as the Orange County Great Park.

Joe Guimond, KNX assistant news director and executive producer, said specific topics to be covered will include UC Irvine, the Irvine Co., the Spectrum, the Verizon Amphitheater, and Irvine Research and Control Center, the city’s traffic management facility.

Program Director Andy Ludlum — a 14-year employee of CBS Los Angeles, which owns the station — described a positive experience developing the “KNX on Your Corner” series, a relatively new program that first broadcast in December.

“It’s so positive,” he said Wednesday. “It gives us a chance to connect with our listeners and gives our listeners a chance to know us as real people. What we do, it’s the type of thing competing media can’t really deliver. People may have gone to cable TV or satellite services, but they can’t get local news there. We see that our future is dependent on how involved we are in our local communities.”

The day’s worth of programming will be broken up into three sections, including a 5 to 9 a.m. broadcast by KNX news anchors Dick Helton and Vicky Moore, a 1 to 2 p.m. business hour with Frank Mottek, and a 2 to 7 p.m. news segment presented by Diane Thompson and Chris Sedens.

“We started this program because we felt that people in the greater Los Angeles area are kind of isolated,” Ludlum said. “They live somewhere other than where they work, spend most of their time in transit and know very little about communities that are only a half hour away. So, we’re opening up the routes with this program.”

KNX staff encourages public attendance throughout the day, to meeting the station’s anchors and guests. Cities already profiled by the program include Encino, Hollywood, Culver City, Anaheim, Monrovia and Santa Monica. Later this year, it will look at Glendale and Beverly Hills. Huntington Beach and Torrance will be featured in 2013.
