Engaged couple found dead in car

A man and woman in their late 20s were found shot and killed in the parking lot of an upscale condominium complex near UC Irvine, police said Monday.

Detectives believe the engaged couple, who recently moved into the Watermarke building at 2100 Scholarship, were the victims of a double homicide, Irvine Police Lt. Julia Engen said.

The bodies of Keith Lawrence, 27, and fiancée Monica Quan, 28, were found with gunshot wounds in Lawrence’s parked car about 9:10 p.m. Sunday.

The victims were not college students, Engen said.

Additional details about the victims were not available.

Witnesses did not hear the gunshots or call 911. A passerby called police after seeing Lawrence’s body slumped over in the car, police said.

Entry into the parking structure requires a key-code and there are security cameras throughout the complex, a resident said, adding that some spaces are allocated for overnight guests.

“We moved here because it was so safe — Irvine was the safest city in America,” said Sharon Smith, who has lived in the complex for a few years. “I guess like anywhere else we’re going to have a few incidents ... nobody worries about living here.”
