A joint study session of the Costa Mesa City Council and Planning Commission on Tuesday will address regulation of future housing developments in the city.
The small-lot subdivision ordinance would help standardize new tracts of detached, single-family homes built on small lots, according to a city staff report.
Developers wanting to build on small lots have needed variances or deviations from the city's standards.
The study session, which begins at 4:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1A at City Hall, will consider input on proposed changes to the city's zoning code. City staff are not asking for changes to the parking standards.
Benefits of a small-lot subdivision ordinance include creating a type of new housing that's seen as preferable to condominiums and apartment complexes, according to city staff. The subdivisions also would not require homeowners associations.
An example of such a project is a housing subdivision in the Eastside, along Tustin Avenue. The 14 homes for the East Haven project are replacing two older homes, which have been demolished, on a 1.24-acre plot.
