High School Roundup: Costa Mesa beats Saddleback, snaps 13-game league losing streak

The Costa Mesa High football team defeated host Saddleback 35-14 on Friday night in an Orange Coast League game at Segerstrom High, ending the Mustangs’ 13-game losing streak in league play.

Junior quarterback Nick Burton threw for five touchdowns for the Mustangs (3-6, 1-3 in league).

The win snapped a five-game losing streak overall for Costa Mesa. It also marked the Mustangs’ first league victory since a 6-0 win at home over the Roadrunners on Nov. 4, 2016.

Costa Mesa will close out the regular season by playing host to Estancia (2-7, 1-3) in the Battle for the Bell rivalry game on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.

Ocean View 34, Godinez 12: Braden Crabtree threw three touchdowns for the Seahawks in Friday’s Pac 4 League game at Santa Ana Valley High.

Brandon Alcaraz, Luke Crabtree and Hunter Arce had touchdown catches for Ocean View (6-3, 1-1 in league). Anthony Ramirez had a touchdown run, and Jobe Belles had two interceptions on defense, including one he returned for a touchdown.

The Seahawks host Laguna Beach (5-4, 1-1) in the league finale on Nov. 1 with second place on the line.

Los Alamitos 28, Huntington Beach 12: Brandon Ferrin had a punt return for a touchdown for the Oilers in Friday’s Sunset League game at Cerritos College.

Brandon Bova scored a rushing touchdown for Huntington Beach (1-8, 0-4 in league).

Santa Ana 36, Estancia 6: Nathan Pacheco had a rushing touchdown, six tackles and a forced fumble for the Eagles in Friday’s Orange Coast League game at home.

Nathan Zalpa added 10 tackles and one fumble recovery for Estancia (2-7, 1-3 in league), and Lucas Pacheco chipped in with eight tackles.
