College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball outlasts University of San Diego in season opener

Senior guard Evan Leonard had 19 points and six rebounds, helping the UC Irvine men’s basketball team to a 76-73 victory at the University of San Diego in Tuesday night’s season opener.

Senior forward Tommy Rutherford had 16 points and six rebounds for the Anteaters, while redshirt sophomore forward Collin Welp scored 13 points.

UCI overcame a 14-pont halftime deficit, outscoring the Toreros 42-25 in the second half.

The Anteaters play at Pepperdine on Saturday at 5 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 79, San Jose State 77: Junior Alexis Seaton had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Anteaters in their season opener Tuesday at Bren Events Center.

Jordan Sanders and Lauren Saiki chipped in 16 points each for UCI.

The Anteaters play at Oregon State at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Preseason WNIT tournament.

Los Angeles Trade-Tech 78, Golden West 39: The visiting Rustlers dropped their season opener on Tuesday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Riverside 3, UC Irvine 2: Makayla Wolfe had 14 kills for the visiting Anteaters in Tuesday’s Big West Conference match that the Highlanders won 11-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 15-8 Tuesday.

UC Irvine fell to 1-18 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

MEN’S SOCCER

Golden West 3, Orange Coast 3: Rigo Cuevas had a goal and an assist, helping the visiting Rustlers remain atop the Orange Empire Conference on Tuesday.

Martin Garcia-Sandoval and Jonathan Ruiz each scored once for Golden West (7-2-8, 4-0-5 in conference), which has 17 points in the standings, one point ahead of the second-place Pirates (10-3-5, 4-2-4). Adrian Covarrubias stopped six shots.

Orange Coast’s Danny Vargas scored two goals, while Takumi Taniguchi added a goal and an assist. Pablo Ramirez had four saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 1, Golden West 1: The visiting Pirates and the Rustlers remain tied for fifth place in the Orange Empire Conference following Tuesday’s draw.

Orange Coast is 6-10-3 overall and 3-6-2 in conference play, while Golden West is 6-8-3 and 3-6-2.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Pacific Coast Highway Invitational: Vanguard finished in sixth place as a team with a total of 847 strokes after Tuesday’s final round of the two-day tournament at Quail Lodge and Golf Club in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Vanguard’s Malia Kiger tied for sixth overall, carding an 83 to take her two-day total to 168. Kamryn Keller finished tied for ninth at 179 after shooting 90 on the last day.
