College Roundup: Vanguard men’s soccer wins Golden State Athletic Conference tournament opener

Stewart Alvayero, Joey Barry, Andrew Robles and Marc Trejo all scored as the Vanguard University men’s soccer team beat the Master’s University 4-1 on Saturday at home in the opening round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament.

Issac Pinto, Oscar Salas and Robles had assists for the 25th-ranked Lions (12-5). Victor Negrete made six saves.

Vanguard plays against Menlo College in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Pepperdine 77, UC Irvine 73: Eyassu Worku had 26 points and six rebounds for the Anteaters in Saturday’s nonconference game on the road.

Brad Greene and Tommy Rutherford each scored 10 points for UC Irvine (1-1), which hosts Life Pacific on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bren Events Center.

Orange Coast 91, Barstow 86: Jonathan Ileleji had a game-high 23 points to go with five rebounds and three steals for the Pirates in a San Diego City College Tournament game on Saturday.

Myles Woods added 21 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists for Orange Coast (1-1). Chase Nomaaea had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Aundrel Pua also scored 16 points.

Antelope Valley 71, Vanguard 64: Aziz Seck had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lions in Saturday’s nonconference home game.

James Moore added 15 points for Vanguard (2-1).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard 3, San Diego Christian 0: Samantha Arellano had six kills for the Lions in Saturday’s 25-12, 25-11, 25-18 Golden State Athletic Conference sweep on the road.

Hailey Petersen, Kamalah Noel and Tobi Sanders all had five kills for Vanguard (24-7, 13-5 in conference), which finished conference play tied for third place.

Vanguard opens GSAC Tournament play against William Jessup on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Menlo College.

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 2: Abby Marjama had 16 kills for the Anteaters in Saturday’s 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 8-15 Big West Conference home loss on Saturday.

Makayla Wolfe had 14 kills and Onye Ofoegbu added 13 kills for UC Irvine (4-19, 1-10 in conference).

MEN’S WATER POLO

Golden West 9, Orange Coast 7: The host Rustlers came away victorious in the final of the Orange Empire Conference championships on Saturday.

Golden West improved to 21-3 on the season, while Orange Coast dropped to 16-6.

University of Pacific 19, UC Irvine 9: Casey Lynton scored three goals for the No. 15 Anteaters in Saturday’s Golden Coast Conference match on the road.

Jason Evezard scored twice for UCI (6-12, 0-4 in conference).

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Golden West 5, Cypress 4: The Rustlers won the third-place game of the Orange Empire Conference championships on Saturday at Golden West College.

Golden West took its record to 18-9 with the win.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Oregon State 86, UC Irvine 57: Jordan Sanders scored 23 points for the Anteaters in Saturday’s Preseason NIT Tournament game on the road.

UC Irvine fell to 1-1.
