College Roundup: UCI men’s basketball uses balanced scoring to beat Hawaii

Collin Welp had a game-high 18 points to lead the UC Irvine men’s basketball team to a 74-60 win over Hawaii on Saturday night in a Big West Conference opener at the Bren Events Center.

Brad Greene added 13 points and 21 rebounds for the Anteaters (9-8). Evan Leonard also had 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. Eyassu Worku scored 13 points.

UCI travels to face Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Arizona Christian 76, Vanguard 72: Christian Wilson had a team-high 15 points for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference game at home.

James Moore added 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Isaiah Gentry also had 11 points and six rebounds.

Vanguard (10-7, 3-2) returns to the court on Thursday, when it plays host to William Jessup at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

Cal State Northridge 70, UC Irvine 62: Haleigh Talbert had a team-high 13 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists for the visiting Anteaters on Saturday in a Big West Conference opener.

Lauren Saiki added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds for UCI (4-11). Alexus Seaton also had 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.

The Anteaters will take on UC Santa Barbara at home on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 78, Arizona Christian 57: Vanessa Murphy had a game-high 19 points to go with 10 rebounds for the host Lions on Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Michaella Elad added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, and Tristen Rollon contributed 13 points and three assists.

Vanguard (10-2, 4-1) will host William Jessup on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
