College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball outlasts UC Riverside

Eyassu Worku had a game-high 18 points, and the UC Irvine men’s basketball team beat UC Riverside 63-59 on Wednesday night in a Big West Conference road game.

Collin Welp scored 17 points for first-place UC Irvine (16-10, 8-2 in conference). Evan Leonard had 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers.

The Anteaters play at Hawaii on Saturday at 9 p.m.

Orange Coast 69, Irvine Valley 67: Myles Woods scored a game-high 24 points off the bench to help the Pirates pull off an upset at home for their first Orange Empire Conference win of the season on Wednesday.

Jonathan Ileleji added 23 points, six rebounds and two steals for Orange Coast (4-21, 1-12 in conference). Andres Ortega had 10 points and three assists, while Aundrel Pua provided four points to go with six rebounds and six assists.

SOFTBALL

Cypress 12, Orange Coast 0 (five innings): Janea Brannen and Makenna O’Toole each had three runs batted in to lead the host Chargers on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference opener.

Jaelyan Operana and Joanna Michaels had two hits apiece for Orange Coast (1-3).

Saddleback 12, Golden West 0 (five innings): Anne Thibert and Naomi Varela each had three hits for the host Gauchos on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference opener.

Veronica Belleza and Alyssa Porras combined on an abbreviated no-hitter for Saddleback (7-2). Belleza went four innings in the start, striking out eight.

Golden West dropped to 3-3 overall.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Moorpark 3, Golden West 1: Shawn Krantz had 16 kills and six solo blocks to lead the Raiders to a 27-25, 25-19, 28-30, 25-22 win on Wednesday in a nonconference match at home.

Golden West dropped to 2-3 overall.
