College Roundup: UC Irvine baseball beats USC

Pinch-hitter John Jensen hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, helping the UC Irvine baseball team defeat USC 5-1 in a nonconference game on Tuesday at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.

Nick Pinto (1-2) struck out seven, walked none and allowed two hits in six shutout innings.

Luke Spillane and Connor McGuire each had a run batted in for the Anteaters (6-6), who start a three-game series at home against Sacramento State on Friday at 6 p.m.

Golden West 8, Orange Coast 4: Ely Stuart went two for three with two RBIs for the host Rustlers in Tuesday’s Orange Empire Conference opener.

Luke Chung had a hit and drove in two runs for Golden West (9-9), while Seth Nelson, Enrique Bennett, Jesse Fonteboa and Vinny Tosti had two hits apiece.

Bryce Ruggeroli picked up his first victory after striking out seven and allowing two runs in six innings.

Ryan O’Halloran was two for five with a double and a run scored for Orange Coast (9-7).

MEN’S GOLF

Sacramento State Invitational: Jonathan Kang shot an even-par 72 and shared sixth place, leading UC Irvine to a third-place finish in the tournament on Tuesday at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove.

The Anteaters finished with a three-round total of 897. Cal State Fullerton (866) won the tournament and Cal State Northridge (889) was second.

Kang finished at five-over-par 221 (75-74-72).

WOMEN’S GOLF

Gunrock Invitational: UC Irvine finished sixth in the tournament on Tuesday at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento.

The Anteaters shot a final round of 295, giving them a three-round total of 924. Cal won the tournament with an 887, followed by Sacramento State (897), Wisconsin (906), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (909) and UC Davis (918).

UCI’s Sienna Lyford placed 19th as an individual with a three-round total of 230.

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 7, Saddleback 2: The Pirates improved to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the Orange Empire Conference after Tuesday’s match at home.
