Huntington Beach’s Jake Gibb claims first AVP Hermosa Beach Open title

HERMOSA BEACH — Huntington Beach resident Jake Gibb and partner Taylor Crabb, the No. 2 seeded team, won the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Hermosa Beach Open by defeating No. 3 Trevor Crabb and Sean Rosenthal 21-16, 17-21, 15-11 in the final last Sunday.

The finale featured two former Olympic teammates in Gibb and Rosenthal and two brothers in Taylor and Trevor Crabb facing each other in the first AVP Hermosa Beach Open since 2010.

Gibb finished with 11 kills, two digs, two blocks and two service aces, earning his first Hermosa Beach Open title. The 41-year-old beat Rosenthal, his former U.S. teammate in the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012, and picked up his 28th career AVP crown.

Taylor Crabb got the better of his older brother Trevor Crabb, and won with Gibb for the second time on the AVP.

Other local men with top-10 finishes included Huntington Beach resident Ed Ratledge and partner Eric Zaun, who shared seventh, and Laguna Beach resident Ty Loomis and partner Maddison McKibbin shared ninth.

Jennifer Fopma, a Costa Mesa resident, and partner Kelly Reeves split ninth in the women’s event.
