High School Roundup: Marina girls’ basketball sweeps first half of Wave League

Katie Nguyen finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals, as the Marina High girls’ basketball team defeated visiting Newport Harbor 51-30 on Thursday in a Wave League game.

Marina (16-9, 3-0 in league) completed a perfect run through the first half of league.

Emily Sakamoto added 10 points, and Greta Graeler pulled down eight rebounds for the Vikings.

Willa Rath led the Sailors (11-14, 1-2) with 12 points and nine rebounds. Chloe Swanson added six points and nine rebounds, and Genevieve Perry also scored six points.

Fountain Valley 65, Laguna Beach 38: Tiffany Shimizu led the visiting Barons with 13 points, and Kat Luu added 15 rebounds in a Wave League game Thursday.

Audrey Tengan contributed 10 points, six steals and five rebounds for Fountain Valley. Madison Suekawa and Kristen Ho both had nine points.

The Barons (12-12, 2-1) are in second place in the league.

Los Alamitos 66, Edison 29: Sydney Gandy had a team-high 23 points to lead the host Griffins, who moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Surf League with Huntington Beach and Corona del Mar at 2-1 on Thursday.

Edison dropped to 10-12 overall and 0-3 in the league.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 3, Los Alamitos 3: Alexis Komisza scored twice for the visiting Chargers on Thursday night in a Surf League match.

Chloe Helenihi also scored for Edison (11-5-3, 0-1-2 in league). Nicole Field and Cecilia Roghair had assists.

Los Alamitos (19-0-2, 2-0-1) is in first place halfway through the league schedule.

Edison plays at Corona del Mar on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Corona del Mar 0, Huntington Beach 0: Goalkeeper Giovanna Broderick made six saves for the visiting Sea Kings in Thursday’s Surf League match.

Second-place CdM (11-2-4, 1-1-1 in league) hosts Edison on Tuesday, while Huntington Beach (11-6-6, 0-1-2) hosts Los Alamitos at 5 p.m.

Newport Harbor 1, Marina 0: Reese Bodas scored on Skylynn Rodriguez’s assist for the Sailors in Thursday’s Wave League match at home.

Goalkeepers Jessica Gardner and Sami Nowak combined on the shutout for the first-place Sailors (14-2-5, 3-0 in league), who play at Laguna Beach on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Marina (6-9-6, 0-2-1) is at Fountain Valley on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Laguna Beach 3, Fountain Valley 1: The Breakers improved to 4-9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Wave League after Thursday’s match at home.

Fountain Valley dropped to 6-8-3 overall and 0-2-1 in the league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 6, Los Alamitos 4: Kili Skibby scored two goals for the Sailors in Thursday’s Surf League match at Corona del Mar High.

Morgan Netherton, Lily Gess, Taylor Smith and Brooke Banta each scored once for Newport Harbor, and Emily Cantu made four saves.

The Sailors (12-7, 1-2 in league) host Laguna Beach on Monday at 4 p.m.

Edison 12, Marina 2: Hannah Taylor scored three goals for the Chargers in Thursday’s Wave League match at Corona del Mar High.

Tatianna Monzon and Delaney Lewellyn each added two goals for Edison (4-10, 2-1 in league).

Lana Kardos had both goals for the Vikings (6-10, 0-3).
